According to reports in England this afternoon, Premier League giants Manchester United are on the verge of securing a deal for Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes.
Gomes, a 24-year-old Portuguese international, arrived at the Camp Nou in the summer of 2016 for a fee of 35 million Euro, plus a further 20 million in potential add-ons.
In signing the Valencia star, the Blaugrana beat out competition from the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
However, Gomes failed to properly settle in Catalonia last season, starting just 17 matches in La Liga and managing just 3 goals across all competitions.
As a result, the man labelled by many in Portugal as the possible heir to Xavi at Barcelona was heavily linked with a move away from the La Liga giants with just a solitary campaign under his belt.
In the end, though, Gomes stayed put, despite rumoured offers from both Tottenham and Juventus.
His second season with the Blaugrana has hardly been an improvement on his debut campaign, with the 27-time capped international having been handed just 2 La Liga starts and 1 Champions League start by manager Ernesto Valverde to this point in the campaign.
Old Trafford bound?
Unsurprisingly, Gomes’ lack of time on the pitch this season has led to rumours that he could yet depart the Camp Nou in January, with reports in England this afternoon suggesting that a deal to move on could already be in the pipeline.
The club rumoured to be close to agreeing a deal for Gomes are Manchester United, who were heavily linked with a move for the Portuguese midfielder during the summer.
The Red Devils are known to be on the lookout for reinforcements in the middle of the park, with the Mirror claiming this afternoon that Jose Mourinho and co. are on the verge of a deal worth £31 million.
These reports come in the wake of several outlets claiming that United are also weighing up a move for Napoli midfielder Jorginho.
